AD Tiered maintenance
The diagram below (igure 3) illustrates how a tiered approach to Hints and tips
maintenance addresses all of the asset classes and uses a different
mix of people, tools, and data collection activities at each tier.
Beneits of tiered maintenance
Non-critical assets may never receive care beyond simple screening
and inspection. Semi-critical assets would only get attention as prob- • You don’t spend time analyzing

lems arise. Critical assets would be screened and inspected regularly,
and problems would escalate as needed, sometimes all the way to • Reduces the number of work

start with advanced analysis, regardless of whether they are in poor
condition or great condition.
• You don’t deploy your experts on
simple faults
Using this machine pyramid (igure 3), we can look at the value and
beneits of tiered maintenance—remember our analogy of some assets
as “star athletes”? Think of this in terms of healthcare. Notice that the
Star Athlete is the sole domain of the expert analyst. Star Athletes get
expert maintenance regardless of their condition.
• When do you and I get an MRI? Only if we have a problem that our doctor can’t diagnose.
• When does a star athlete get an MRI? Every third Wednesday, regardless of whether they are
injured or not.
The remaining assets would be seen by entry-level technicians that would use simple screening
tools and experienced technicians using diagnostic tools.

The numbered items on the left (igure 3) show how tiered maintenance starts with screening your
assets for problems, then diagnosing the common faults, and then analyzing complex faults
only when needed.
